8 steps toward wellness
Set short- and long-term goals. Knowing what you are hoping to achieve can give you something to focus on and strive for. Set realistic goals and write them down, and give yourself a reasonable time frame in which you want to achieve them.
Plan ahead. Put exercise and meditation time on your weekly calendar. Plan out healthy meals and snacks, and go shopping and prepare foods in advance if you know you are going to have a busy week. If you will be eating out or traveling, search online for restaurants with healthy options.
Crowd out bad choices, especially where food is involved. Filling your pantry and fridge with quick, healthy snacks and healthy desserts will help you not be tempted to grab unhealthy options. Drink plenty of water between meals, and fill up on high-fiber fruits and vegetables that will leave you feeling satiated.
Reward success, no matter how small. Avoid rewarding healthy eating habits with junk food. Instead, do something nice for yourself. Take time to read a good book or watch a movie, go for a walk or make a healthy dessert.
Keep it simple.Try not to overwhelm yourself with too many changes all at once. Start small with improving your sleep habits and starting your day with
a glass of water.
Have fun! Being healthy should not be a chore. The process of improving your health and well-being should be enjoyable and inspiring. Instead of looking at it as fighting a health challenge or a weight issue, see it more as a way to promote and better your health and well-being.
Be kind to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up for not being perfect or for falling off the wagon. You’re human, and it’s normal to have setbacks. Take the opportunity to learn what you can do to minimize or avoid them. Be your own coach—think positive thoughts and encourage yourself. Forgive yourself for making an unhealthy choice and move forward with even more determination.
Get support. Talk to and share ideas with friends or family members who are on the same path.Consider choosing a health counselor for personal support and additional ideas.
